Elk Hair Caddis (Black) #14
Dead-drift it or give it a twitch for darker caddis. Best on evenings and in faster water.
Everything for a caddis hatch, from the emerging pupa to the high-floating adult. Twelve each of six proven caddis patterns.
Caddisflies are one of the most important foods for trout on Western rivers, hatching from spring through fall and often in huge numbers on summer evenings. The Caddis Box covers the whole hatch: the Emerger Caddis Nymph for fish feeding below the surface, the X-Caddis for insects stuck in the film, and the Elk Hair Caddis in three colors plus a high-floating Goddard Caddis for the adults.
Caddis vary from black to tan to olive depending on the river and the time of year. When trout are picky, matching the color of the naturals is often what gets them to eat. With twelve of each color, you can match what you see and still have plenty to lose in the willows.
Look for fluttering, moth-like insects over the water and splashy rises, especially in the evening. Caddis hatches start in spring and run through fall on most trout rivers, so this box earns its spot in your vest for most of the season.

Imitates the caddis pupa rising to hatch. Swing it at the end of the drift or fish it as a dropper.
The adult patterns are size #14, and the Emerger Caddis Nymph is #16. Those sizes match the most common caddis on Western trout rivers.
Tan is the most common. Catch a natural off the water or check streamside bushes and match the body color when you can.
